Devices, industries and business models are converging rapidly
Speaking at ST-Ericsson’s press event at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Gilles Delfassy, President and CEO at ST-Ericsson, said: “Our industry is going through a deep transformation. Mobile platforms are at the heart of the convergence with other industries, which is driven by people’s need for mobility everywhere.“
“In the past 10 years, our industry has witnessed an important change – from basic communication to the explosion of broadband, the emergence of cloud computing and the rapid growth of developing markets – and now the vision of an all-connected world is becoming a reality.“
”Wireless semiconductor players are becoming more and more crucial to enabling the next-generation mobile experience. To manage the complexity of consumer and customer requirements, it is important that semiconductor suppliers have all the necessary capabilities and solutions, from modems to connectivity, from multimedia to applications, while mastering their integration and providing the required flexibility.“
Delfassy said ST-Ericsson is perfectly set to contribute to the transformation of the wireless industry. “We have the technology to make it happen and to serve the full range of consumer requirements: from powerful smartphones with a wide range of connectivity options, to very cost-effective devices based on highly-integrated platforms.”
ST-Ericsson presented its portfolio of solutions to address the key industry trends: thin modems, application processors with integrated modems, entry platforms and connectivity solutions, targeting the high value entry, smartphones and connected device segments.
At the Congress, ST-Ericsson also introduced its new multimode modem architecture, delivering a powerful, flexible and scalable solution. It addresses the key challenges of future multimode broadband wireless devices, such as tradeoffs between flexibility and cost, while achieving major improvements in power consumption. It also enables a dramatic reduction in the need for handset manufacturers to conduct network and field test validation across multiple standards and platforms. Moreover, the new architecture builds on the existing leading commercial technologies, including TD-HSPA, HSPA+ and LTE.
