ST-Ericsson Raises the Bar for Mobile Music Platforms
The AV5212 can double music playback times and provide very high-quality audio
ST-Ericsson, a world leader in wireless platforms and semiconductors, has launched a highly cost-effective audio solution that handset manufacturers can use to integrate a state-of-the-art music player into a conventional mobile phone.
The AV5212 solution, which includes ST-Ericsson’s Playback Time Extender technology, will typically double the music playback time on existing mobile phone platforms: More than 60 hours is easily achievable. The AV5212, which has a very high signal-to-noise ratio of 102dB and Pop&Click noise canceller technology, will also enable a mobile phone to produce exceptionally clear, high-quality, audio on a par with the best standalone music players.
“Many consumers want to be able to play music continually on their mobile phones without having to worry about battery life so handset manufacturers are now requesting platforms that will deliver playback times of 50 hours or more,” said Patrick Dureault, Vice President, Head of the Analog and Mixed Signal business unit of ST-Ericsson. “The AV5212 exceeds this new benchmark, while also delivering exceptional audio quality. We believe its best-in-class signal-to-noise ratio will become a new target for phone makers seeking to offer an alternative to a standalone music player.”
The AV5212 is also designed to be simple for a device manufacturer to implement both in terms of hardware and software integration. It can easily be added to entry-level phone models manufactured on low cost equipment, for example.

ST-Ericsson was the first company to introduce the Playback Time Extender technology, launching it on the open market in a standalone audio integrated circuit in 2008.
The AV5212’s Pop&Click noise canceller makes the ‘pop’ or ‘click’ sound of key presses inaudible, so the music listening experience isn’t interrupted when the user accesses other applications on the phone.
