Pioneering ST-Ericsson Solutions Boost Mobile Battery Life

Innovative new components can extend a mobile device's connection time by up to 30%

ST-Ericsson, a world leader in wireless platforms and semiconductors, is launching a new product family that can significantly improve the battery life of mobile handsets and other connected devices. The innovative power management components can extend the talk time or Internet connection time of a mobile device by up to 30% compared with solutions that supply power directly from the battery.

ST-Ericsson’s pioneering PM3533 all-in-one solution enables a device’s dual-mode RF subsystem* to operate with low cut-off voltage battery technology, thereby using all the energy available in the battery. ST-Ericsson’s new PM3110 is 20% smaller than other DC/DC regulators for RF power amplifiers on the market today. Scheduled to be in volume production in the first quarter of 2011, both the PM3533 and PM3110 dynamically match the power supply to the needs of the RF power amplifier and significantly reduce the overall energy usage of the device.

“Matching energy supply and demand in real-time is the key to ensuring that power-hungry mobile devices can frequently connect to the Internet, access multimedia services and make voice calls without exhausting their batteries,” said Patrick Dureault, Vice President, Head of the Analog and Mixed Signal business unit of ST-Ericsson. “Our two new solutions push forward the frontiers of power management technology and underline ST-Ericsson’s leadership in this important field.”

Notes to Editors

*A mobile device’s radio frequency (RF) subsystem transmits radio signals to and from the nearest base station in the mobile network. The RF power amplifier, which boosts a device’s RF signal to maintain a good connection with the base station, can be one of the most energy-intensive components of a mobile phone.
