ST-Ericsson Takes the Lead in Embracing Bluetooth Low Energy Wireless Technology from the Bluetooth SIG

Enables mobile phones to become short-range access hubs for infotainment

ST-Ericsson, a world leader in wireless semiconductors and platforms and an Associate member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), today announced that its connectivity combo solution, CG2900, incorporates Bluetooth low energy, the hallmark feature of the Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0 that was adopted by the Bluetooth SIG. Building on a strong commitment to research and development of wireless technologies to power innovative new mobile devices, ST-Ericsson participated in the development and interoperability testing of Bluetooth low energy.

Consumers will now be able to use their mobile phones to collect and display information from Bluetooth low energy sensors and to link these devices to the Internet for value-added applications such as remote healthcare and fitness monitoring. Mobile phones thus become the hub of a varied ecosystem of coin-cell powered devices enabled by Bluetooth low energy including watches, medical, sports, battery level, temperature, pressure, home and proximity sensors, and can also act as a controller for games, gadgets, consumer goods and home devices.

Dennis Kish, head of Business Unit Connectivity at ST-Ericsson said: “Bluetooth technology is a standard feature in mobile phones. We believe that the addition of Bluetooth low energy offers endless possibilities for innovation in an exciting new mobile phone infotainment ecosystem. ST-Ericsson’s cooperation with the Bluetooth SIG and joint development efforts on Bluetooth low energy reiterate our commitment to open standards and our contribution to the wireless technology ecosystem.”

Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director, Bluetooth Special Interest Group said: “Bluetooth low energy, the hallmark feature in the newly released Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0, is the result of successful collaboration among prominent mobile technology vendors, enabling rapid advancements in how consumers use mobile technology to enjoy information and entertainment at the touch of a button.”
