ST-Ericsson brings high-definition mobile viewing to the living room

Enables full-HD transmissions from smartphones to TVs

ST-Ericsson, a world leader in wireless semiconductors and platforms, today launched a family of single-chip 1080p high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) transmitters to enable streaming of high-definition multimedia content from mobile devices to TVs. Consumers will now be able to easily connect their mobile devices to new (digital) as well as old (analog) televisions to playback HD videos, photos, movies and games.

“Today mobile computing is rapidly moving into the high definition world, enabling superb 3D, HD, video and imaging on your mobile device,” said Patrick Duréault, head of the Analog and Mixed Signal unit at ST-Ericsson. “We are driving innovation in high definition mobility by integrating key entertainment technologies to create a more enjoyable experience for consumers. Our latest family of transmitters will further enhance the role of mobile devices as entertainment hubs.”

The broadcast and content industries are rapidly shifting focus to offer high-definition programming and consumers are demanding consistent viewing experiences – anytime, anywhere and on any device, while manufacturers are seeking innovative new technologies to stay ahead of the curve. The HDMI transmitter family is the result of ST-Ericsson’s close collaboration with customers to understand such market evolutions and offer market-ready technologies for application in wireless devices.

ST-Ericsson’s single-chip HDMI transmitters, the AV7100 and the AV8100, offer mobile device manufacturers the smallest and most cost-effective, low-power HD interfaces available today.  Equipped with one of ST-Ericsson’s HDMI transmitters, mobile devices with 3G, 4G and WiFi connectivity will be able to stream HD channels, such as YouTube HD, live from the Internet to their TVs anywhere.

Notes to editors
ST-Ericsson will show the capabilities of the AV8100 integrated into its U8500 smartphone platform at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February. At the ST-Ericsson stand in Hall 8, visitors will be able to see 1080p HD content played directly from the U8500 over the AV8100 to a large HD wide screen TV.
