ST-Ericsson was first to announce Symmetrical Multicore Processors (SMP) for smartphones and we have led the SMP adoption together with ARM® for AndroidTM. Today, we continue to focus on delivering the best user experience for smartphones, increasing the processing power while driving down power consumption. Our latest CPU innovation, eQuad, makes this possible.

In the eQuad CPU, the same two cores can operate efficiently in two distinct modes: as industry-leading high-performance cores or as very low power highly energy-efficient cores. This does not require additional hardware or software compared to a traditional dual core, making this architecture very simple and fully usable by today’s applications. The two cores, used in two different modes thus create an electrical Quad or eQuad.
eQuad relies on FD-SOI technology and introduces a new type of transistor. Thanks to an ultra-thin buried insulator layer and the improved body biasing capabilities, the FD-SOI transistor can switch from the high performance mode to the low power one.
As a majority of the applications running on smartphones are low performance tasks, the eQuad CPU, which is extremely power efficient at low frequency, brings significant power savings compared to other quad architectures. eQuad can also run at much higher frequencies, delivering the best performance for demanding applications. The eQuad CPU thus delivers the best of both worlds – highest performance and lowest power consumption and with no additional complexity for hardware or software.
The NovaThor L8580, based on the innovative eQuad and FD-SOI technologies, takes performance and power efficiency to new levels for user devices without compromise.
