VAMOS

The voice efficiency revolution for GSM

VAMOS (Voice services over Adaptive Multi-user channels on One Slot) is an industry-leading development that enables operators to double the voice capacity for GSM networks without any decrease in voice quality. VAMOS is a very cost efficient way to handle increasing traffic growth. This is particularly relevant in emerging markets, where GSM traffic is expected to grow sharply in the next few years. In mature markets, VAMOS can help operators to make more efficient use of their GSM resources, especially due to upcoming refarming opportunities in existing GSM frequency bands.

Furthermore, the more efficient use of the GSM networks will also mean that less hardware is needed to support a given traffic hence helps to reduce energy consumption and related CO2 emissions.

VAMOS (“Quad rate”) technology is a part of 3GPP Rel 9 standard which allows 4 voice calls in one GSM timeslot. Today up to 2 simultaneous voice calls in one GSM timeslot is possible by using GSM Half Rate or the more enhanced AMR half rate technology which is more and more used in congested GSM networks.

VAMOS technology can be used with new VAMOS capable handsets allowing for an improved voice quality under poor radio conditions but also supported with legacy (SAIC* capable) handsets.

*SAIC=Single Antenna Interference Cancellation
