PLATFORM DESIGN FOR LONG PLAYBACK & RECORDING TIMES
ST-Ericsson has integrated the best technology for video quality and compression, the H.264 video codec, providing excellent quality for video recording and playback. Our platforms are designed for high power efficiency enabling long playback and recording times of HD content. Given the variety of video content in different formats, our platforms also feature codecs such as MPEG-4 and VC-1 to deliver the same quality as the set of digital TV boxes.
The Playback Time Extender is the ST-Ericsson data buffer technology to increase playback time. Originally developed for audio, it is now used also for video. It typically doubles the video playback time of a mobile phone platform by buffering video data at high speed and then putting all parts of the platform in low power mode.

WHAT IS A VIDEO CODEC?
A video codec enables video compression of digital video, i.e. it reduces the bit rate needed to represent, store and transmit the video information.
Good video codecs are able to reduce the bit rate significantly without noticeable quality loss in the video stream. Today, H.264 is the facto standard video codec that provides efficient video compression at very high quality.
